Renaissance Longsword
Swords like this Renaissance long sword are often called bastard or hand and a half swords. The term "bastard" indicates that this versatile sword can be used one handed or two handed.
The double-edged blade has three fullers. The two outer ones run the length of the ricasso only and the middle one extends over approx. one-third the length of the blade. The two side guard rings at the curved crossguard are an indication that this edged weapon was in use during the transition between the rapier and the classic sword. The grip is made of wood wrapped in leather and decorative wire for a sure grasp. Our Renaissance long sword includes a scabbard with an attractive mount and chape.

The longsword, often called a hand-and-half, saw a great deal of service as a weapon of war, but was also employed a great deal as a civilian weapon of self-defence. Coupled with a dagger, the longsword was an excellent defence against robbers, thieves, footpads, assassins and even some of the robber bands that might roam the countryside. A good serviceable point allowed it to be used for thrusting, and a medium weight allowed it to be used easily and carried with equal ease. This weight also allowed it to be used with one hand with a dagger in the other. But when needed, it could be gripped with both hands for a very powerful cut. This is a beautiful and very functional sword with steel pommel and guard. The grip is wood wrapped with leather and wire. Includes Scabbard.
