St Andrew Shield

In 832 at the Battle of Athelstaneford, King Angus of the Picts faced a larger army of Saxons and was doubting the outcome of the battle. However, the night before the battle he had dreamt that, before the battle took place, he would see a cross in the sky and would conquer his enemies in its name. The following morning he saw the Saltire Cross in the sky and, filled with confidence, went on to win the battle. From that time Saint Andrew and his Saltire Cross were adopted as the national symbols for an emerging Scotland. The Saltire Cross became the heraldic arms that every Scot is entitled to fly and wear.

Our St Andrew Shield is constructed from wood and is painted with the Saltire of St Andrew. It is decorated with brass lions and brass decorative fittings. On the reverse side is a hanging chain and a clever device for vertically mounting a single sword or 2 crossed swords.
