This incredible Iron Age torc was found by a farmer in 1950 when he was ploughing his field near the village of Snettisham. It was found with a bracelet and a coin which helped date it to around 75 BC. Many other torcs and jewellery have been found on this site but the Great Torc is considered the most important find. It is likely, given the abundance of finds, that this site was connected to the royalty of the Iceni tribe (led at one time by Queen Boudica) who were based in this area at the time.

The torc is one of the most elaborate golden objects made in the ancient world. Not even Greek, Roman or Chinese gold workers living 2000 years ago made objects of this complexity. For more information about the original check out the British Museum website.
