Roman Scutum Shield - Child Size

The Roman Scutum (meaning shield) formed part of the standard equipment issued to the Roman Legionary. By the time of the invasion of Britain by Emperor Claudius in AD 43, this style of scutum (there have been other earlier designs) was becoming more widespread but was not yet the standard pattern. The Roman Scutum provided excellent protection against missile attacks, especially when used in the testudo (Latin for tortoise) formation.

Although no complete Scuta have ever been found in the UK (wood decomposes easily), the metal fittings from some shields have survived - there are some particularly nice examples in the British Museum.

Our Roman Scutum Shield - Child Size is constructed from linen covered wood and hand painted like the originals. It features a steel boss in the centre with a wooden grip behind it, as seen on the full size scutum.
