Norman Crusader Kite Shield - Unpainted

Kite Shields started to appear in Scandinavia during the 11th century and were called Holfinn-skjoldr. Their original teardrop form continued to change as the warriors protection increased. Over time the top of the shield became flatter (as helmets covered more of the head), the boss was removed and they became smaller as leg protection got better. Anglo-Norman Huscarls were equipped almost exclusively with Kite Shields at the Battle of Hastings. Shields were often painted to help identify the owner or his affiliations. The Bayeux Tapestry shows a great array of Kite Shields featuring different artwork.
Our Norman Crusader Blank Kite Shield is one of the best value shields available to buy in the UK. It is constructed from 10mm thick wood and has adjustable leather straps and a cushioned pad for the arm. It has a blank canvas facing and edging ready for you to paint depending on your intentions… 10th century shields were painted red for war! This shield is a little on the light side for full contact re-enactment but is perfect for theatre and film work and great as a display piece.
