Greek Shields were known as “Hoplons” after the Hoplites that carried them into battle. They were a Hoplite’s most important piece of kit. They enabled him to fight in formations and were large enough to support a body – hence the Spartan saying “Come back with your shield, or on it” which basically means “Victory or death”.
