Although caligae can resemble modern sandals, they were actually designed as marching boots. What the Romans considered “sandals” were not worn outside and were considered indoor footwear. Caligae were heavy soled hobnailed military boots issued to Roman Legionaries and auxiliaries throughout the Roman Empire.
Our brown Roman sandals are true to type: made of one piece of genuine leather, the uppers form a system of straps that are tied together with a leather lace. The iron nails hammered into the sole are for reinforcement and improved traction, and they make stamping around in these black sandals potentially harmful.
