This style of shield was used most commonly in Italy (Rotella) and Spain (Rodela) but also used in other European countries such as England where it was known as a target. Rotella can be seen in various treaties such as Achille Marozzo’s Opera Nova dell'Arte delle Armi from the 16th century.
Our Reinforced Round Rotella Shield is hand beaten from 16 gauge steel – making it both tough and durable enough for re-enactment and HEMA. You can still see the traces of the smith’s hammer marks on the surface. It features 2 adjustable leather straps and cushioning pad for the arm to soak up impact.
