"Hoplon" means "weapons, armour," and Hoplite is thus an armed citizen of ancient Greece, and over the centuries he formed the main group of the feared Greek armies. In addition to the large shield ("aspis"), his standard equipment included a lance with a steel tip and a sword with a steel blade - if the lance broke.
