The advanced development of cleaving weapons went hand in hand with the spread of plate armor. Hammers, axes, and maces were easy to produce, frightfully easy to use, and above all, were completely deadly. They did not even have to split or cleave enemy armor – they only needed to leave a few deep dents to immobilize their opponents. With smashed chests and unable to get out of their armor, many knights simply suffocated to death on the battlefield.
Our German war hammer does not look very dangerous at first glance, but appearances can deceive. This replica of an original in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg, Germany has a short, solid spike and a head shaped like a castle tower that is securely fastened to the wooden handle. Brass studs in the gripping area add control and comfort.
