Chainmail provides excellent cut resistance but unfortunately does not cushion the blow from the attacker’s weapon. As such a thickly padded gambeson was worn underneath to stop the impact trauma. Soldiers that could not afford chainmail generally wore thicker gambesons with higher collars as their sole form of protection (with the exception of a helmet). Gambesons worn under armour were usually thinner to help with manoeuvrability.
This style of gambeson is great for medieval re-enactment. It has strap-and-buckle front closures and is crafted in heavy-duty padded canvas. It has good blow-absorbing properties when worn separately and provides superior protection from cuts when worn under mail or plate. This gambeson features open armpits for extra manoeuvrability and ventilation.

Our main courier is Parcel Force (Within the UK) and GLS within Europe. Shipping is calculated by the volumetric weight of the product(s) ordered. The volumetric weight calculates how much room your order will take up in the courier’s plane/van and a price is worked out accordingly.
