Back in Ancient Greece, Greek warriors wore the earliest form of cuirass to protect the torso from blows. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the wearing of rigid protection to protect the torso became scarce, with warriors preferring the manoeuvrability offered by chainmail. Towards the middle of the 14th Century, knights started to reinforce their chainmail with plate armour in the more vulnerable areas. By the start of the 15th Century they were pretty much completely encased in plate armour.
