Jousting Close Helm
Our Jousting Close Helm is made in Italy. It is constructed from 20 gauge steel with a lacquered finish and features 1 piece tilting visor that can be raised and lowered. The visor is unusual in that is does not feature ventilation holes on either side. As such this helmet would get hot and stuffy in combat and was probably designed for jousting where the visor would only be lowered during the charge. Not recommended for contact re-enactment but perfect for display or theatrical use.

The Close Helm first appeared in the 16th century and was still in use during the English Civil War in the 1640’s. Not long after this it was discarded in favour of lighter and cheaper helmets. It was popular both on the field of battle and in jousting tournaments. Some of the finest Close Helms to be crafted in England were made at King Henry VIII's Royal Almain Armoury in Greenwich.
